The Road to Emmaus
Our purpose and mission statement is “faith to follow”. Why the road to Emmaus? In Luke 24, we read of two men talking together on their way to the city. In verse 15 it says “And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.” So first, our goal is to meet Jesus! As they continued down the road, they spoke with Jesus. Let’s make it a priority to communicate and grow deeper in a relationship with Him! As we read further in this story, verse 27 tells us “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” On this path we follow, we need to learn from Jesus – every bit of the Word of God will teach us. So we strive to learn by studying it!
The Christian life of discipleship is a journey, down a path forged by faith. We begin in faith, accepting that Jesus is the only way to heaven, the only one who can save us from our sins. We grow in faith, studying the Bible and purposing to become more like Christ every day. And we continue in faith, by recognizing the sovereingty of God in everything we do.
The road to Emmaus captures so much of what discipleship is about – meeting a risen Saviour Jesus, communing with Him, and learning about Him. At Emmaus, let’s begin in faith – reaching people with the gospel so they can begin their own relationship with Jesus. Then, grow in faith – learning the Bible and teaching it to others, endeavoring to be Christ-like. And finally, let’s continue in faith – stepping out when things seem impossible, trusting God is in control!
